Building a village was established in 2019 due to the conditions of the community park not being safe and utilized for our youth.
Shawn Washington, who is the founder & president of BAV, was born & raised in this community. One day after a visit to Arcadia on a Special holiday, Shawn notice the community park was not in good enough condition for the kids to play on the playgrounds and basketball courts in the Louis Anderson and MLK park on Martin Luther King blvd.
After seeing the conditions and noticing most of the youth no longer spend time interacting as usual, Shawn became very frustrated and decided to do something about it.
Shawn begin talking to other childhood friends, Darian Bailey, DeWayne Bladen, & Jimmy Walls, who all shared the same vision about making a difference in the community. So they decided to host a community event and gave out free food and purchased bounce houses for the kids to come out to play again.
After this event and seeing the community come out to support their vision, BUILDING A VILLAGE was formed. They established the organizations, host monthly community meetings, talk to community leaders, and attended city council meetings to address the concerns the community had with their local parks & recreation facility.
They teamed up with the community and started cleaning up the park and also painted the water fountain and concession stand in the park. (Please see pics).
The first year, they developed and plan with the local city council and park administrator, they were allotted the first $50,000 to begin the restoration project for the park. They quickly realized this would not be enough to fully restore the park.
After continuous meetings and discussions with the city council and park administration, the plan was budgeted for $600,00 to complete the project. A $200,000 grant was allocated to BAV for the park restoration project. However we still need help to complete this well needed project for our youth.
We are in need of $350,000 to complete this project. Help support our mission to complete this restoration project.
